| Description: | |||
Almost 6,000 Maryland National Guard members have been called up since September 11, 2001, and most were sent to Iraq. These deployments caused financial harm and emotional suffering to Guard families and impaired our state's ability to respond to emergencies.
The Congressional 2002 Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) is the law under which National Guard members have been sent to Iraq. However, the language in the AUMF specifying the tasks of the military is no longer relevant to what the Guard is being asked to do. Thus, current National Guard deployments to Iraq are illegal.
We call on Maryland Senators and Delegates to pass legislation requiring Governor O'Malley to refuse any future deployments of the Maryland National Guard to Iraq under the 2002 AUMF.
