National Priorities Project analyzes and clarifies federal budget data so that people can understand and influence how their tax dollars are spent. Since 1983, NPP has focused on the impact of federal spending and other policies at the national, state, congressional district and local levels. Reports and analyses are provided for both current and projected budgets.
If you haven't taken a look at National Priorities Project's Cost of War counters, they now provide separately and together figures for the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Drop down menus provide comparable costs for states, communities and essential services.
For instance, “Taxpayers in Illinois will pay $558.5 million for proposed ballistic missile defense in FY2010. For the same amount of money, the following could have been provided:
384,922 Children with Health Care for One Year.”
